This sacramentary was crafted for Henry II (973-1024) prior to his coronation as Holy Roman Emperor in 1014. The workshop responsible for its creation was located in Ratisbon, present-day Regensburg. The influence of the Carolingian model, specifically the Codex Aureus, a ninth-century gospel manuscript commissioned for Emperor Charles the Bald and preserved in the monastery of Saint Emmeram, played a pivotal role in inspiring the Ottonian school of illumination, which emerged a century later.
