Venice with the Salute
Joseph Mallord William Turner
TATE Britain
London, GB
circa 1840
This painting of Venice by Turner may have been started with the intention of attracting commissions, but it ultimately remained unfinished. It depicts the lower end of the Grand Canal, capturing the shimmering dome of the church of Santa Maria della Salute in the afternoon light. Among the works Turner created in his later years, his depictions of Venice were the least controversial and most sought after by collectors.
