Impression III (Concert)

Impression III (Concert) was created shortly after Wassily Kandinsky attended a concert featuring works by Arnold Schoenberg in 1911 in Munich. Impressed by the bold innovations of Schoenberg's twelve-tone music, Kandinsky engaged in a lively correspondence with the composer, leading to Schoenberg's participation in the Der Blaue Reiter exhibition and contributing an article to the almanac.
Kandinsky referred to the captivating painting Koncert as an 'impression,' a "direct impression of the 'outer nature.'" This shows that he understood 'impressions' not only as optical but also sensory experiences that he sought to depict without conventional representation. The painting is based on an acoustic experience and embodies its translation into art.
